Kolkata Conference: Acid Attacks and Gender Based Voilence

In February 2025, on February 22, the Brave Souls Foundation convened a powerful conference in Kolkata to address acid attacks and sexual and gender-based violence, bringing together around 50 survivors along with activists, legal experts, medical professionals, policymakers, and social workers .The event featured panel discussions and open forums where survivors such as Shaheen Malik and Monisha Pailan courageously recounted their physical, emotional, and economic struggles—highlighting high treatment costs, repeated surgeries, and the crushing social isolation stemming from stigma and lax enforcement of legal protections. Speakers unanimously called for urgent action: stricter control or even complete bans on acid sales, mandatory psychiatric counseling, faster convictions and stiffer sentences.
