In 1480, forces of the Ottoman Empire landed in southern Italy and besieged the coastal city of Otranto, then part of the Kingdom of Naples. The assault culminated in mass executions and the enslavement of survivors, events later memorialized in Christian tradition as the martyrdom of the Martyrs of Otranto. While popular retellings often focus on convent narratives and extreme atrocities, contemporary and near-contemporary sources primarily document the execution of resisting males and the deportation of women and children into captivity, consistent with late medieval siege warfare practices. This episode analyzes nine critical elements of the campaign: the strategic motive behind the invasion, the political message sent to Italy, the documented fate of captives, and how later ecclesiastical accounts shaped collective memory. By distinguishing archival evidence from devotional amplification, we reconstruct what can be historically supported about the fall of Otranto and how conquest, faith, and propaganda intersected at a violent turning point in Mediterranean history. #DarkHistory #Otranto1480 #OttomanEmpire #MedievalWarfare #ItalianHistory #ReligiousConflict #MartyrsOfOtranto #HiddenHistory #MediterraneanHistory
