Piazza della Vittoria, also known as Victory Square, is a prominent and historic square located in the city of Pavia, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The square's name commemorates Italy's victory in World War I. It was originally built in the 19th century as part of the city's urban renewal projects. The Piazza della Vittoria in Pavia is one of the liveliest areas of the city. The square is enclosed on all sides by historic buildings, while the main pedestrian area in the middle is dotted with a series of outdoor bars and restaurants. The southern end of the Piazza is marked by the 12th century Palazzo del Broletto which is attached to Pavia Cathedral. Piazza della Vittoria holds significance not only as a symbol of victory but also as a central hub for social, cultural, and political activities in Pavia. The Visconti Castle of Pavia (Italian: Castello Visconteo di Pavia) is a medieval castle in Pavia, Lombardy, Northern Italy. It was built after 1360 in a few years by Galeazzo II Visconti, Lord of Milan, and used as the sovereign's residence by him and his son Gian Galeazzo, first Duke of Milan. In the 16th century, an artillery attack on Pavia destroyed a wing and two towers of the castle. The frescoes that completely decorated the rooms of the castle are now almost completely lost. The castle was the seat of the Visconti library until its transfer to Paris in 1499. Today, it hosts civic museums that display an impressive collection of artworks and historical artifacts.
