The UK driving practical test is a hands-on assessment conducted by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to evaluate a candidate's ability to drive safely and competently. It is the final step before obtaining a full UK driving license. Test Structure: Eyesight Check: The test begins with an eyesight check, where the candidate must read a vehicle's number plate from a distance of 20 meters. ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ Questions: The examiner asks two vehicle safety questions. The ‘Tell Me’ question is asked before the driving begins, and the ‘Show Me’ question is asked while driving. General Driving Ability: The main part of the test lasts about 40 minutes, during which the candidate drives on various road types. The examiner assesses how well the candidate controls the car, follows road signs, handles various traffic conditions, and uses appropriate signals. Reversing Manoeuvres: The candidate is required to complete one of the following reversing maneuvers: Parallel parking at the side of the road Parking in a parking bay Reversing around a corner or turning the car around Independent Driving: For about 20 minutes, the candidate must drive independently. This can involve following directions from a sat nav or following road signs to reach a destination. Emergency Stop (Randomly Selected): One in three tests includes an emergency stop, where the candidate must stop the vehicle quickly and safely upon the examiner’s signal. Pass/Fail Criteria: Minor Faults: A candidate is allowed up to 15 minor driving faults. Major Faults: Any serious or dangerous fault results in an automatic fail. Outcome: The result is given immediately after the test. If the candidate passes, they receive a pass certificate and can apply for their full license. If they fail, the examiner explains the mistakes, and the candidate can retake the test after a minimum of 10 working days.
