Rory Wathern’s visit to Indonesia inspired this passionate plea for more consideration for animals and the animal tourist industry. Rory, a junior student of the British School in The Netherlands, argues that we should not compete amongst ourselves for an animal selfie. The selfie you share with your friends, does not show the potential harm that is done to the animals and the suffering that could lie behind this. We need to think about animal welfare and animals should not be forced to perform for human entertainment. Find out what solutions Rory suggests during his TEDxYouth@BSN talk. Let’s break the mould. Rory Wathern is a student of the British School in The Netherlands. He moved to the Netherlands in 2019 after two years in Guangzhou, China. He likes school, sports (especially football) and reading books. “Breaking the Mould” is the second TEDxYouth event organised by The British School in the Netherlands. Speakers explore ideas around ‘If I Could Lead for a Day’, ‘Tackling Tough Truths’ and ‘An Invitation for Change’. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, were x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).
