BIG SPIDER - The Giant Golden Orb Weaver (Nephila pilipes) | short spider documentary

The Giant Golden Orb Weaver (Nephila pilipes) is the second biggest orb weaver on the Planet. Adult females reach impressive sizes- the leg span can reach 20cms. They are truly an impressive sight in the jungle. Although they can have a scary appearance, they are really mild tempered. Their venom is effective against prey items, but not so much against humans- similar to the effects of a bee sting. The males are hundreds of times smaller then the female, and often multiple males can be seen courting the same female. The web has a beautiful golden sheen (hence the name). The golden silk of the spiders web has even been used to make some very cool clothing. This is not a dangerous spider by any means, but the fangs are quite big, and if provoked or grabbed, the females can defend themselves, and the mechanical damage can be quite painful. (Can't speak from experience, because none of the specimens I filmed showed any signs of aggression) In Europe, we have nothing quite like this spider, not even close. They are quite common in Asia, and in some parts these spiders are considered a delicacy. It was amazing seeing them in the wild, and it was one of my top species on the list to film in Thailand.
