USA: IWO JIMA PHOTOGRAPHER - JOE ROSENTHAL

(19 Feb 1995) English/Nat A stirring image caught by a photographer's camera fifty years ago became a symbol of the Iwo Jima anniversary. It shows US soldiers raising the flag during the battle to capture the Pacific island from the Japanese. It was used as the model for a memorial to the thousands of soldiers who lost their lives in the battle. It has been called the greatest war photograph of all time-the picture capturing six members of the U-S Marine Corps, one of the world's legendary fighting elite, raising the flag at Iwo Jima after a bloody battle with the Japanese. The struggle for the volcanic island of Iwo Jima strengthened the United States Marine Corps and their classic amphibious assault was captured on film by a young Associated Press Photographer. On February 23, 1945, four days after D-Day at Iwo Jima, 33-year-old AP photographer Joe Rosenthal snapped a shot of six marines hoisting the U. S. flag atop Mt. Suribachi. His picture was later transformed into this sculpted monument which commemorates the battle at the island. SOUNDBITE: "This picture has done quite a lot to attract attention of people to what those men were doing out there, and they then want to get more of the story what kind of a battle it was, what their courage and tenacity was and the great losses, great sacrifices." SUPERCAPTION: Joe Rosenthal, Associated Press Photographer Although he has received criticism that the photo was a fake, Rosenthal is glad it was he who snapped the stirring moment. SOUNDBITE: "Oh no, no, I'm really glad because it I can feel if I vicariously I had some kind of part in the battle simple as that, and I get an awful lot of that and if this is being egocentric, so be it." SUPERCAPTION: Joe Rosenthal, Associated Press Photographer Rosenthal, who is now 83, lives alone in San Francisco, California. In 1945, he was 33, too nearsighted for military service, putting him in place for capturing one of the most memorable photos of all time.
