I’m thrilled to share a piece from my upcoming concert of Jewish-inspired music! Here’s an excerpt from “Ir me kero, Madre, a Yerushalayim” (I want to go, Mother, to Jerusalem), from Elisha Denburg’s beautiful song cycle, Four Ladino Folk Songs. This solo vocal piece blends a traditional melody with vocal lines that evoke the style of liturgical, cantorial chant. The refrain, “En el me arimo yo” (In Him I place my trust), preserves the traditional melody, while the rest of the piece is a freely composed devotional plea. The piece draws inspiration from Hineni (Here I Am), a prayer chanted by the cantor on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Hineni is a deeply personal prayer for the cantor but also serves as a communal plea, connecting the cantor’s voice with the prayers of the entire congregation. This song beautifully captures that balance between personal reflection and communal devotion. Special shoutout to my talented friend Maureen Batt, the incredible singer who premiered these songs! 👏💫 Translation and transliteration are from the liner notes of Elisha Denburg’s album Durme, Durme—Four Ladino Folk Songs.
