Hector served in the Marines during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy and felt he had to hide his identity. His service experiences began to affect him when he transitioned out of the military, and he tried to cope by using drugs and alcohol. His substance use eventually got him into trouble with the law, which prompted him to get support. Treatment, including an intensive outpatient program and cognitive behavioral therapy, helped Hector on his path to sobriety.
