We rang in the New Year in Chiang Mai, Thailand. 2023 was an incredible year. It started in Italy and took us to Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Cypress, the U.A.E, Oman, Egypt, the U.S., Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. We met amazing new friends. We spent a lot of time with family. New Year’s Eve was low-key for most of the day. We hung around the house and had a small party with new worldschooling friends. Around 11 p.m. we saw tons of lanterns in the sky. They were being released from the river. Michael loves lanterns, so we decided to head out towards the celebration and release a lantern ourselves. It was busy in the streets, but our group of 13 (including our friend Renee in her wheelchair) managed to weave through the crowds to the water. Lucas and Henry were scared because some of the lanterns hit trees and power cables. There were also people shooting fireworks all around. We successfully launched a lantern and then found a spot along the river’s edge for fireworks and the countdown to 2024 Our first job of the New Year was to extend our Thai tourist visa. The renewal was not as smooth as our visa renewal in Krabi, Thailand. Our landlady did not file the proper paperwork, resulting in seven police/immigration officials arriving at our Airbnb looking for the landlady! Michael had fun with that visit. He even got a selfie with the officers. We resolved the issue and got our extension, but it is a whole day we cannot get back. It took us 5 minutes to extend in Krabi and 9 hours in Chian Mai. Tip, if you’re ever in Thailand check that your hotel/landlord has filled in the proper tourist registration for your stay. Later in the week, we visited the Chiang Mai Flower Festival. It is a flower show with holiday lights, a fountain/light show, and fireworks. We sat for hours in the market area eating fresh, hot, fried dumplings and playing games with our friends. We spent a lovely afternoon in the park with two families playing card games and talking. The kids ran around. Lucas and Michael played a little badminton. I found a slackline. Towards the end of the week, we hiked in the mountains. We planned to do a short loop and ended up hiking straight uphill for two hours, past waterfalls, over fences, and through the jungle until we reached the temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Lucas’ watch reported that we climbed the equivalent of 160 flights of stairs. Phew! The views at the top, and seeing the temple were nice rewards. We went back to Freebird for another open mic night. Our friends Jake, Gabe, Pete, and Angus performed. They each played and sang two songs. Gabe, Pete, and Angus on the guitar, and Jake on the piano. We love supporting other worldschoolers. Henry managed to get his silly puddy stuck in his hair. It was fun getting it out. Coconut oil did the trick. Lucas and I flew to Bangkok for his Invisalign check-up. We just went for one night. He is doing great with his trays. We played some pickleball and went out for fancy Italian food. We don’t miss Bangkok traffic. It took almost two hours to get from the airport to our AirBnb when it should have taken 40 minutes. We got in some more pickleball and Muay Thai. Lucas and Henry went to the movies with their friends. We went to a science museum and planetarium. Our friend’s niece, Chloe joined us in Thailand. She will be traveling with us for the next several weeks. Visitors are always welcome (hint, hint). We ate at some of our favorite restaurants before leaving. www.gowatkinsgo.com #family_travel #family_vlog #roadtrip #traveling #family_vloggers #travel_the_world #travel_vlogs_gowatkinsgo #gowatkinsgo #worldschooling #worldschool #world #family_vlog #traveling #southeastasia #southeastasiatravel #thailand #chiangmai 🔔 ℂ𝕝𝕚𝕔𝕜 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕓𝕖𝕝𝕝 𝕥𝕠 𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕪 𝕦𝕡𝕕𝕒𝕥𝕖𝕕 𝕠𝕟 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕍𝕚𝕕𝕖𝕠𝕤 𝕗𝕣𝕠𝕞 𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕔𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕟𝕖𝕝 𝔾𝕆𝕎𝔸𝕋𝕂𝕀ℕ𝕊𝔾𝕆🔔
