Columbia Journalism School and The New York Times hosted a critical conversation on the global, escalating threats to press freedom. The afternoon opened with remarks from Rebecca Blumenstein, President of NBC News and Chair of the Columbia Journalism Review’s Board, followed by a fireside chat between Columbia Journalism School Dean Jelani Cobb and New York Times Chairman A.G. Sulzberger. The program continued with a powerful panel discussion featuring journalists confronting authoritarian tactics around the world: Sheila Coronel (The Philippines), Juliana Dal Piva (Brazil), András Pethő (Hungary) and Siddarth Varadarajan (India). The event concluded with closing reflections from Bruce Brown, President of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and Azmat Khan, Patti Cadby Birch Assistant Professor of Journalism and Director of the Simon and June Li Center for Global Journalism.
