Title: Thin deformable living layers and collective synchrony in confluent epithelia Abstract: In the first part of this talk, I present a series of low-dimensional continuum models that capture the coupled dynamics of flat and curved living films, including variations in film thickness, shape deformations, internal velocity fields, and the dynamics of orientational order. I then compare the resulting instabilities and dynamics with those found in purely two-dimensional systems. In the second part of the talk, I discuss synchronization in dilation modes (expansion and contraction) and the formation of phase defects in epithelial systems. I show that the divergence of the velocity field exhibits robust, large-scale temporal oscillations, and that the temporal persistence of these oscillations varies non-monotonically with cell density: synchrony initially increases with density, reaches a maximum at intermediate densities, and is lost at higher densities.
