#mountainconstrucctionphilippines #philippines #expatlife This mountain construction update in Bukidnon turned into one of the most unforgettable weeks of our lives — tribal induction, eel adobo, a live pig ceremony, and an 87-year-old retired doctor still driving himself through the mountains of the Philippines. We started with what was supposed to be a simple property update… pouring the new patio porch, expanding and concreting the driveway, installing additional fascia, adding hot water to the kitchen, and finishing structural work next door on Chrissy’s sister’s foundation — columns bored, termite treatment done, real progress happening. But life up here never stays “just construction.” A few days later, the guys went 100 meters down the hill to the creek and came back carrying 3½ kilos of fresh eels. We cooked eel adobo the old-school way. Chrissy’s father ate the head. Chrissy enjoyed pork mask and fresh durian like she always does. No restaurants. No delivery apps. Just mountain food and fresh air at elevation. In between all that, we purchased a live pig out in the province, had it weighed, and participated in an indigenous ceremony where we were formally inducted into the local tribal community. Chrissy wore traditional indigenous attire. There was dancing, music, and a level of cultural belonging that you simply cannot manufacture as a tourist. And then something unexpected. We sat down with an 87-year-old retired doctor at a 1,000-foot mountain resort — a man still driving himself all over the Philippines. Sharp mind. Independent. Strong. Watching him reinforced something I’ve said many times on this channel: your later years don’t have to mean shrinking your life. They can mean expanding it — if you build the right foundation. We also installed CCTV on the mountain property, tightened up security, and continued turning raw land into something permanent. Every visit, it becomes more real. And in the middle of nowhere — literally — Chrissy found a ₱10 Wi-Fi peso box that gives five hours of internet access. That’s about $0.18 USD. Which means there is absolutely no excuse in 2026 for anyone to disappear or avoid video calls. If a woman is serious, she can get online. Period. This is what building a second life in the Philippines actually looks like: • Real construction progress • Real family integration • Real provincial food • Real culture • Real independence in your 60s, 70s, and beyond No fantasy. No resort filter. Just mountain air, hard work, and a community that’s slowly becoming home. If you’re a Western man thinking about retirement in the Philippines, relocating to Mindanao, or building property in Bukidnon — this episode shows you what “boots on the ground” really feels like. As always, if you need guidance on retirement planning, relocation strategy, dating in the Philippines, or doing proper due diligence before meeting someone in person, you can book a consultation with us at the link below. Mountain life isn’t always easy. But when the patio gets poured, the driveway is set, the tribe welcomes you, and dinner comes from the creek below your house… it’s hard not to feel like you made the right decision.
