From TrekWorks Welcome Modelers, In this segment we feature a custom build up of the Round 2 Models USS Enterprise model kit. We built this kit as the USS Constellation NCC-1017 as seen in the classic Star Trek episode, The Doomsday Machine. The model features lighting effects to simulate the damage to the ship from the Doomsday Machine attack. The original filming miniature used in this episode, was actually an AMT Enterprise model kit and was done by the Howard Anderson company which produced most of the FX shots of ships and space scenes for Star Trek TOS. We replicated the damage seen on the Constellation and added a bit more details. The damage to the warp engines are highly detailed and parts of the internal mechanisms can be seen. Also the exposed internal decking of the saucer section has been added. The model was done to represent how the ship looked just after it was attacked with fires still burning in various areas. Fire can't burn in space you say? True, but the ships oxygen generators would continue to produce air thus the explanation ;) This was a fun build and there was the opportunity to take a few liberties with the details along the way. Including the lighted ports of the auxiliary control room where Commodore Decker was found all by himself by the crew of the Enterprise. After assembly, the model was mounted on a custom display base with switches for the lighting. For more great builds and reviews of Star Trek model kits tune in to the TrekWorks channel on You Tube. Don't miss out on the upcoming Klingon Cruiser build with fiber optic lighting. See you there!
