Swimbait Review: Gathering Heat A while back, Kevin at BGC posted asking for recommendations for someone to swim vid his newest bait, the 9 Inch Shad Glide. Thanks to the many many folks who commented and tagged, I was and still am both blown away and truly humbled by the love and support that Universe had shown me. Yall are the best, and I appreciate it. You made this review possible! The BGC 9 is a scaled up version of the popular BGC 7 (side by side pics in the comments below), and I was sent one in the XSS variety featuring Kevin's paint. The straight retrieve is wide and fluid, with the head moving 45 degrees in either direction. The tail follows with a smooth undulation that allows the bait to look realistic in the water. The bait will also roll just a touch on a medium straight retrieve, allowing the full profile to be seen by the fish, and providing a bit of flash as well. The bait finds center and upright nicely, and does not want to roll too far and lose its stability. Speaking of stability, the BGC 9 passed the burn test with flying colors, staying extremely true and upright. For a bait of its size, i also noticed that it does not pull back hard at all. You can certainly feel the head jump side to side, but there is not a whole lot of handle torque that is caused by some bigger baits. This makes the bait less fatiguing to fish in all presentations. It feels like a smaller bait than what it is. The glide presentation is how I utilize this bait in most scenarios, varying between wider slow glides (or fast wide glides) and short choppy 180 style glides... due to it's slow sink rate, easy slow reel bumps (1/2 to 3/4 turn) allows the bait to glide off to one side, and then hang and suspend before another reel bump is introduced. The bait will travel the full 90 degrees off center, but does not try to over glide unless your reel bumps are too long. This is easy to get a feel for, just takes practice... The bait is also able to be hit with harder reel chops (still 1/2 reel turn) and it will glide at a rapid rate, offering a very erratic presentation that has great draw power especially in clear water. Please note, this is able to be done on long casts (unable to get on film), but the bait (and many others) will want to roll/nose down if you hit it that hard close to the boat. I use this presentation for fishing shallow points, and have caught some bigs doing it. I will also introduce the reel chops in with a sequence of the slow glides to help get lazy followers to trigger. Per above, the BGC 9 can also be tight twitched with short reel handle bumps or also with the rod rip to achieve narrow 180 type action, and is very controllable. Often I will wide glide the bait until I get near cover, then hit it with a few hard short twitches to try and trigger a reaction bite. Last, the bait performs well at a stop and go, so long as the pause is done as the bait is moving sideways during your straight retrieve. The bait will continue in whichever direction it is pointed when you pause...this works well especially at slower speeds, as the pause on a faster retrieve tends to cause the bait to slightly nose up. However, if there is surface activity, that nose up action on the pause can certainly be a benefit. The BGC 9 is a 9" resin bait, weighing in at 6 oz. It comes with a pliable but firm rubber tail, and stock with 1/0 Owner ST 36 hooks. Due to its weight, it casts extremely well, but you also need some stout gear to send it. Per recommendation of other testers, I picked up a Dobyns 908, and that rod throws the bait very well. Plenty of backbone, with some give on the tip section. I tried the 867 also- it will throw it, but it's not fun... Matched the rod with a Conquest 400, and 25 lb Izorline XXX copoly. 20 could be used, but I noticed no dampening of action going up to 25, and felt much more comfortable. Mono/Fluro would be fine, braid may overpower the bait, especially close to the boat. The BGC 9 will be available in limited quantities at the Gathering, so be on the lookout if youd like to pick one up soon! Thanks for joining, hope you enjoyed the review. Vid will be uploaded to IG (@swimbait_reviews) and YT (SwimbaitReviews) also.
