In older videos, I've described shipwreck hunting as 'looking for a needle in a very deep, very dark haystack'. That point remains true, but sometimes, you find something. A 'needle' that you weren't even looking for. It's not often, but at times, a shipwreck expedition will find an entirely different wreck than the one they set out for. Take today's video for example. NOAA, back in 2016, surveyed off Wake Island. Looking for the wreck of Hayate, the first Japanese (surface) warship lost in the war. An interesting ship and certainly an interesting potential wreck. Except, well...that's not what they found. They found a merchant ship. A water tanker, Amakasu Maru No. 1. Not something anyone would be looking for, to say the least. I think that makes her more interesting, myself. In fact, I can't think of a single other water tanker shipwreck. Sure, she's not a famous warship or anything.
