The return of Ensign Munro! …a pity they had to get his ineffectual half-brother to stand in for him in this comic. Originally uploaded August 16th, 2010. RUMINATIONS: If you’ve seen my Let’s Play of Star Trek: Elite Force, you basically know the story here, though of course with a few cosmetic differences. Still, I was so damn happy to find out there was a comic adaptation of the game. I absolutely LOVE Elite Force (I enjoyed the second game and plan to do a Let’s Play of that at some point, but the original is the nostalgic one for me) and of course being a Star Trek nerd, I always enjoy talking about the show and games in any regard. On the storyline front, like with so many storyline episodes it was mostly done because one hadn’t been done in a while. Originally it was just going to be the Vohrsoth stuff, but then when I became dedicated to bringing back Mechakara at the end of the Warrior #2-3 review, I decided to have him be recruited by Lord Vyce as the guy with insider knowledge about Linkara, creating a scenario that would play out later in the Silent Hill: Dead/Alive episodes. At this point, the full Lord Vyce suit was ready, but I liked the idea of keeping his reveal for a special occasion. I was also starting to realize that I needed someone else in the suit, not just because of the inevitable battle with Vyce, but also the basic fact that I’m, well, overweight and no matter how slimming black is, the Vyce suit looks different on me than it does on someone skinnier. In these shots, Iron Liz is in the suit, but eventually Will Wolfgram would be the suit actor for Vyce. And despite the fact that it’s kind of a silly little fight and the dialogue doesn’t seem to reveal anything, this is actually a major milestone part of the storyline. This is the first appearance (sound, anyway) of the Entity on the show, with its slow, high-pitched squeal of “Huuumaaaan,” mocking Linkara for his victory over the Vohrsoth. By this point I had figured out Lord Vyce’s backstory (considerably quicker than Mechakara’s, at least) and he hints at the Entity, as well. However, for the fans, most seemed to assume that “The Entity” referred to Linkara, not the thing that he was hunting. Vyce mentioning that his “resources were limited” was the first hint that things were tougher for him in this universe than in others. This episode featured the return of Mechakara in a full body, hinted at the next Silent Hill reviews, showed more of Vyce, and introduced Lieutenant Munro as a recurring character on the show (at least for this storyline). The Vohrsoth was originally supposed to be animated by Happy Harry (who you might know from Saturday Morning Watchmen) and we talked about it and he seemed onboard with doing it, buuuut then he never answered me when I poked him about it since I needed it done with before the episode premiered. I don’t think I’ve actually talked to him very much (if at all) since then and he probably has forgotten about it. I was pissed at him for a bit, but of course I got over it. Dude was probably busy doing something that actually made him money. I just slapped together a crappy little animation from my own horrid artwork and it did the job. Hell, this is already a low-budget show about reviewing comics. It’s okay to LOOK low-budget. After the Vyce storyline, people kept asking why Lieutenant Munro didn’t come around more. I always felt the answer was pretty obvious: he lives in a different universe and saves THAT universe on his own. As Vyce remarks later in the storyline, he’s a champion himself and has better things to do than bum around with Linkara. He served his purpose for this storyline… plus he’s not MY character. Munro was created for the Elite Force game and he belongs to whoever holds the rights to the game. End of story.
