ABOUT THIS VIDEO This first of a short series of videos on the core values and recurrent themes of “art du déplacement” (a discipline related to parkour), is about creativity in training. Whatever your sport or discipline is, creativity does not necessarily mean going for crazier acrobatics; it could very well mean rediscovering the rudiments. In ADD and parkour for instance, we often say that one of our goals is to learn to go from point A to point B in the most efficient way; in actual training, however, we often end up doing drills that are not the most efficient traveling options available, but are wonderfully efficient training methods: they might increase our coordination, or challenge our balance, or help correct our posture… Variety in training is also a way to avoid boredom and laziness, to avoid injury due to overdoing the exact same movements, and to cleverly get out of your comfort zone, finding suitable challenges for you, every day or week. One last thing that I wanted to talk about is “touch”. In an era dominated by plastic, flat textures and visual stimuli, ADD and parkour (just like gardening, etc.) provide ways to exert this most important sense and reconnect with our heritage… Other important themes in “art du déplacement” are dedication and humility, power and courage, community and team spirit. ABOUT VINCENT’S BOOKS With over a dozen books published (both fiction and nonfiction) and several more on the way, Vincent Thibault will soon stand out as one of Quebec’s most prolific writers of his generation. Most of his work is published in French, but Baraka Books recently (2013) published “Parkour and the art du déplacement : Strength, Dignity, Community” (already available in French from Éditions du Septentrion). It is not a book on the techniques of parkour, but on its philosophy. Countless ideas on health, movement, our relationship with each other and with the street furniture—an innovative, must-read for any urban biped. Visit Vincent’s website www.vincentthibault.com, or follow him on Facebook to be sure not to miss any release: www.facebook.com/vincentthibaultdotcom WHERE TO LEARN Vincent co-founded the Académie québécoise d’art du déplacement (ADD Academy of Quebec) in 2011 and acted as its general director for four years. The instructors there all of them have their distinct, complementary energy and approach. Connect with them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/addquebec).
