I light up a cigarette, And gaze at the clock, It’s just another ordinary 11:00 PM. I pick up my phone, Scroll through the messages. Replied hello to a hi— But got no response. I take another puff, Lost in the clock’s slow mo, It’s just another quiet 11:00 PM. Bills on the table, pills I have to gulp, Thoughts dead inside my head. Walking like tired zombies , Phased out completely, I am drifting away. I tap my cigarette, Ash falls down into the ashtray, Just like any other 11:00 PM. A siren wails far down the road, Doppler waves glide down the road. Maybe it’s an ambulance—may all be well, As night keeps its secrets to itself. I breathe out the smoke, Put out what’s left, then say— It’s just another day’s 11:00 PM. Time curls up like smoke, Fades into the light. It’s an ordinary night’s 11:00 PM.
