Discovering the Graphites of Love in Pompeii: Stories of the Past In Pompeii, the city that the Vesuvius froze in the year 79 AD, there is still room for surprise. This time it is not a luxuriously decorated villa nor a fresco intact under layers of ash, but of something much more humble: some graphites of love almost invisible in the corridor that connected the theaters with the way Stabiana. If you like the content that we are sharing, do not forget to subscribe and give like. Your support is fundamental to continue bringing more fascinating stories from the past. The corridor was excavated in 1794, in the early times of the archaeology pompeyana. Since then, around 200 inscriptions had been documented on its walls, many of them had passed by its direct and passionate tone. However, recent researches have shown that this city still had a lot to tell. Through campaigns developed in 2022 and 2025, an international team has identified about 300 inscriptions in total, among them about 80 that until now had passed unperceived for the human eye. This led us to reflect on the richness of the history surrounding us. Their presence in a public space indicates that female literacy was not exceptional in Pompeii. Women not only read these messages; they also responded, which shows us a more complex social dynamic than we thought. The corridor thus becomes a space of exposed emotions, where the intimate becomes public. Together with Erato, other well-known voices reappear, such as farewells to lovers and pleas to Venus. All this leads us to ask ourselves: what other stories and emotions are hidden in the walls of Pompeii? If love occupies a prominent place in the wall, the ritualized violence of the amphitheater is not left behind. One of the most striking finds is the drawing of two gladiators, which reveals an amazing artistic sensitivity. Pompeii’s history is rich and varied. Technology has played a fundamental role in the recovery of these messages. Thanks to advanced digital imaging techniques, new inscriptions and spatial relations between them have been documented. This transforms the corridor into a coherent epigraphic landscape. In Pompeii, where every finding seems to compete with centuries of previous research, the theater corridor recalls that there are still a few stories to be discovered.
