Torna a Surriento is a classic Neapolitan song composed in 1894 by Ernesto De Curtis, with lyrics written by his brother, the poet and painter Giambattista De Curtis. Officially copyrighted in 1905, the song has since become one of the most beloved works of the Neapolitan tradition — alongside timeless melodies such as ’O Sole Mio, Funiculì Funiculà, and Santa Lucia. Rooted in the lyrical culture of southern Italy, these songs were shaped to be sung: expressive, heartfelt, and inseparable from the natural rhythm of the human voice. At its heart, Torna a Surriento is a song of longing — a gentle plea to return, woven with images of the sea, beauty, and emotional devotion. The idea of expressing stories through music — without words, without lyrics — has always fascinated me, and led me to create this series.
