The Sri Lanka Vidayalaya Maha Pirivena in Colombo 10 was founded & establishment in the year 1903 by Medaduwe Vipulasena Mahanayaka Thero. This was constructed on a muddy site hence it was named Ode Temple. Among the pioneers of the Dayaka Sabha of this temple were Muhandiram D.S. Senanayake and several other prominent people of their day. HON. BADDEGAMA WIMALAWANSA ANUNAYAKA THERO AS HEAD PRIEST OF THIS TEMPLE The founder of this temple Ven. Medaduwe Vipulasena Mahanayaka Thero passed away in the year 1948 and Ven. Baddegama Wimalawansa Anunayaka Thero became the head priest of this temple. He, according to the wishes of his honoured teather converted this Maha Pirivena into an excellent institution of education nationally and internationally know. The Dharmashala of the Sri Lanka Vidyalaya Maha Pirivena is too old and in dilapidated condition and cannot be used for any purpose. A new Dharmashala building has to be constructed very soon. The present challenge is how to construct this building owing to the high financial crisis prevailing in the country. We accept your generous contributions and support in this noble endavour. The proposed five storied building has an area of 22500 square feet. The ground floor will be used as a vehicle park. In addition to the main hall there are residential rooms for monks. (Building cost for one square foot is Rs. 4000.00. The cost for one room is one Million Rupees.) These temple, in addition to their religious activities, have engaged in various other social works such as hospital services, handicapped children services etc. specially targeting the lower income group. The Maha Mahinda International Dharmadutha which was initiated by Ven. Baddegama Wimalawansa Anunayaka Thero has made several contributions towards the development of rural villages in Sri Lanka. It has strengthened the brotherhood and solidarity among Sri Lanka and foreign countries. The Sri Lanka Vidyalaya Maha Pirivena hhas produced many monk and lay intellectuals and scholars both from here and aboard within a period of more than 50 years. The Sri Lanka Vidyalaya Maha Pirivena had been the center for a vast amount of academic and literary activities initiated by Ven. Baddegama Wimalawansa Anunayaka Thero. He authored many literary works and some of them were selected for the UNESCO and the Government Awards. PRESENT CHALLENGES Ven. Baddegama Wimalawansa Anunayaka Thero Passed away in the year 1993.after his passing away Ven. Dr. Nagoda Amarawansa Thero succeeded as the high priest of the temple. Today the surrounding of the temple have changed to a great extent. Only a few Buddhist devotees are living in the vicinity while the majority has migrated to various parts of the island. Therefore, the maintenance of the crossroads and every effort has been has been taken to intention of bringing this Maha Pirivena to its previous prestige & reputation by overcoming all these obstacles & difficulties. The Atamuni Seya (Pagoda of the eight Buddhas) constructed by Ven. Baddegama Wimalawansa Anunayaka Thero is a unique Chaithaya (Pagoda) which cannot be seen in any Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. Building with several stories were constructed for the benefit of the buddhist monks. Thousands of Buddhist monks & lay students have been educated at this institute. In addition to the Vidyalankara, and Vidyadaya Maha Pirivenas, Sri Lanka Vidyalaya Maha Pirivena had become the third Pirivena of this kind. MULTI SERVICE ACTIVITIES This Pirivena has provided residentially education from primary to higher level free to many novices both from rural and urban Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. The Pirivena has given special training to monks in Buddhist Missionary activities providing them with knowledge of foreign languages and the Buddha Dhamma.
