Social Security Organisation Malaysia (SOCSO) initiated ‘Return to Work’ programme with the objective of assisting SOCSO’s Insured Person with employment injury as well as those claiming for invalidity pension to return to work. This project allows the creation of a unique architectural solution through close collaboration with an enlightened Client and incorporating biopsychosocial elements, universal access for all, salutogenic design principles, green building and biophiliac hypothesis. The physical solution is the establishment of SOCSO Rehabilitation Centre in Malacca as a one-stop rehabilitation centre with comprehensive range of services and facilities that combines medical, vocational and allied health institute making it the first in this region and elite few in the world. At SOCSO Rehabilitation Centre, the patients are required to undergo medical and vocational rehabilitation according to the ‘Return to Work’ objectives to reintroduce the patients back into normal workforce and society. This process is called the ‘Journey to Healing’. The Complex is configured based on the ‘healing hand’ concept where the non-therapy facilities forming the palm; while the five fingers housed all the therapy blocks. To facilitate the link between these activities within the complex and connection to the primary spine of the rehabilitation centre; a transient space the ‘Sanctuary Garden’ is created. It is expressed architecturally by a signature roof derived from the local Malacca Nyonya fan. The ‘Sanctuary Garden’ is the focal point of all the activities. It is busy in the morning when the therapy activities are in full swing; with patients crisscrossing between blocks and buggies bringing in patients from other blocks. It is an indoor garden that provides resting place to the users during daytime and calm oasis at night when the therapy activities stops. Occasionally it becomes indoor games area and during celebrations, a large indoor hall. Therapy is a painful process; and often time people are wary and embarrassed by the process. A vanity wall is developed to create a neutral screen where the patients can disappear into the therapy blocks. Architecturally this creates a consistent wall to hide the variety of size and height of the therapy blocks. To create familiarity, the wall was painted the same Malacca tiles colour palette and known as the “Selfie Wall”. Soft and hard landscaping is a very strong element that holds the whole complex together. Interstitial spaces formed pocket gardens; while larger spaces are designed for bigger concept garden. It is intended that ‘nature’ and ‘spiritual’ therapy are integral to the healing process. Malacca has a very distinct dry season which require very careful selection of plants and trees to suite the environment. The final selection includes endemic jungle trees and flowering shrubs; while the grass is allowed to dry out during very dry season. The complex manage to integrate the latest rehabilitation facilities within the context of Malaccan Nyonya heritage architecture reference; integrating the local climate and customs and enhance the natural environment to a different level. The existing contours are assimilated into the design not only to allow seamless connectivity between the three storey non-therapy facilities to the single storey therapy blocks; but also to allow multiple pedestrian and buggies connectivity to the rest of the SOCSO Rehabilitation Centre. The architect believe that the biggest success of this project is when a patient transform from a depressed state into a person who has gained his self-respect, loving his family, integrated back into society and eventually contribute back to nation building. This story is repeated again and again at SOCSO Rehabilitation Centre; and we are proud to be part of this process.
