In this video we demonstrate the outcome of our first 2D hydrodynamic simulation project using HEC-RAS 5.0. The computational grid has a basic cell size of 40 x 40 m with numerous refinements around breaklines. The pumping station was implemented as a QH-relation along the boundary of the domain and the emergency pumps as a Flow Hydrograph boundary. Regionalization of the precipitation was implemented through coupling two domains: East and West; each with their own timeseries for precipitation. Weirs with movable crest were implemented as controllable gates. We are particularly impressed with the concept behind HEC-RAS. The combination of a flexible mesh with the subgrid approach is very elegant and results in high computational speed. A downside is the lack of controllable weirs. The work-around via controllable gates is rather tedious. Also, regionalized precipitation and point injections and withdrawals would have been useful features.
