Joburg Mayor Dada Morero recently commented on Helen Zille’s mayoral ambition. Morero laughed it off as a desperate attempt from an established politician looking to regain power over a city on the move. He described Zille’s political party (Democratic Alliance) as an anxious party that’s using its best artillery to try and win back the city of Joburg, which is now in the hands of the African National Congress. Morero said that Zille contesting for mayor would be as unbecoming as former President Thabo Mbeki or Economic Freedom Fighter CIC Julius Malema running for mayor. As if such a position would be too junior for the aforementioned leaders. BOSA Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Ayanda Allie has taken exception to Morero’s belief that municipalities are not worthy of so called political heavyweights! Without advocating for the return of veterans into positions of leadership, Allie stated that Morero’s inferiority complex is the reason why municipalities are in shambles! Allie argued that local government is in desperate need of senior leaders at the helm. Here, the term "senior" was not referring to age but rather the level of qualification, professional experience & acumen. With this explanation, even young leaders can be senior. Allie took exception to Morero implying that local government would be a demotion for decorated politicians like Mbeki, Malema & Zille. Her argument was that whoever a party believes is the best of the best, that person is not too good or too special to run for office in local government. Therefore even the youngest and brightest stars in a party should not be sent to parliament but to local government. "Local" in Local Government doesn't mean low class or inferior quality. Ayanda believes that if a leader were to move from a national or provincial position to local government, that move should not be seen as a demotion. Moving from an executive position in the private sector to local government should not be seen as a demotion. The absolute best candidate should run for office in municipalities, and that should not be seen as a demotion. All parties must take local government seriously and put their absolute best candidates forward. No one is too special for local government. Allie’s view was about the principle, not about Mbeki, Malema or Zille as individuals. The point was that because someone is “senior” it does not mean that running for mayor is beneath them, as if they are superior and therefore should not be at local government level.
