The Native American ghost dance experienced its height of practice during the late 19th century and was a ceremonial dance for regeneration of the earth and the restoration of the earth's caretakers to their former life. The dancers wore special long shirts, painted with figures and patterns in a crimson red color. The dance was plaintive, calling forth the spirits of dead warriors and leaders, remembering their care and leadership, and asking for a return of their culture and life. Ghost Dance practices were basically ended in 1890 by the US 7th Cavalry at the Wounded Knee massacre of 297 Lakota Sioux men, women and children during the dance ceremony. Kristin Wolfe Jensen, Bassoonist and Producer; Robert Hatten, Poet and Reader; Ann Gebuhr, Composer; Andrew Stoltz, Sound Engineer; Calvin Cates, Videographer
