Inveraray ASCENSION: Catherine's Lament

This is the second video extract from Inveraray & District Pipe Band's Ascension Concert in Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall to complement the issue of the band's double CD of the concert - see the band's Facebook site for more information. This is Murray Henderson's innovative arrangement of the pìobaireachd Catherine's Lament. Usually played by a solo piper, the concert performance of pìobaireachd by a pipe corps remains relatively rare. In Murray's arrangement the sensitive addition of a string trio and the band's bass and side drums is distinctively new. Murray Henderson is a renowned player with a formidable competition pedigree. Now retired from competitive piping he runs his own bagpipe and reed business and is much in demand as a teacher. Here Murray's playing of the opening ground (or ùrlar) of the pìobaireachd finds him in authoritative form. Murray, as would be expected, is playing a Strathmore bagpipe (his own brand) with Henderson Harmonic Deluxe drone reeds, a Henderson chanter reed, and a Canmore non zip bag with tube water trap.
