BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (Angenette Levy) -- Mike "Mr. Mike" Jakes was a friend to every child he met. He drove a school bus for pre-school students at the Boone Co. School District. Friday morning, Jan. 30, as he prepared to go out on his route, Mr. Mike died suddenly at the district's bus garage. "He was pretty much a nice one when he drive the school bus," said six-year-old Ayden Brinegar, who rode Mr. Mike's bus a couple of years ago. "He was really good one." Ayden has a teddy bear that Mr. Mike gave to him. He still sleeps with it every night. Ayden said Mr. Mike would sing songs to the children and made them feel safe on the bus. He had a way of making every child feel special. "Ayden has Type 1 diabetes and Mr. Mike had diabetes, too," said Ayden's mom, Angela England. "So he would always check on him and just kind of check out, 'How are you doing today,' and 'How are your numbers?'" Mr. Mike had white hair and a white beard which made him look like Santa Claus. The 58-year-old dressed up like St. Nick at Christmas time for school events. Sometimes he visited the homes of students in his Santa suit to spread a little Christmas cheer. "I knew that I always had a friend in Mr. Mike. I knew he was there even for me," said T.W. Loring, principal of Hillard Collins Elementary School. Loring said he worked with Mr. Mike for at least four years. "That spirit that he had, it carried over throughout the year," Loring said. "It wasn't just during the holiday times. It was throughout. And he was always there to be there for the students." Mr. Mike went above and beyond. He was a school bus driver children won't soon forget. Jakes had a wife, children, and grandchildren.
