This video was taken by MA Marine Fisheries biologist John Chisholm. Recently, there has been a large congregation of North Atlantic right whales in western Cape Cod Bay. All the whales in this video were seen off Manomet Point, located in Plymouth, Massachusetts. North Atlantic right whales are a critically endangered species. It is believed that there are roughly 400 individuals currently in the western North Atlantic. These large whales feed at the surface, increasing the likelihood of coming in contact with ships. All vessels are prohibited by state and federal law from approaching within 500 yards of a right whale. Vessels within the 500 yard distance should slowly and cautiously exit the area. Right whales are large, plankton feeders. They can weigh up to 70 tons and are roughly 50 feet in length. They skim the surface of the water for tiny animals called zooplankton while feeding. These whales have large heads and no dorsal fin. They are black in color and have a broad, deeply notched tail with a smooth trailing edge.
