Before the Black Church had buildings, budgets, or official institutions, it had songs. Songs carried theology when books were forbidden. Songs held communities together when families were torn apart. Songs became sermons, prayers, protests, and promises — all wrapped in melody. In this moving session of The Black Church lecture series, we trace the sacred history of Black church music from the sorrow songs of slavery to the rise of gospel, hymns, spirituals, freedom songs, and contemporary worship. We explore how this music functioned not merely as sound, but as survival — shaping faith, sustaining hope, and preserving dignity in the face of unimaginable suffering. This lecture reveals how Black sacred music became the heartbeat of Black faith, the language of lament and joy, and the soundtrack of freedom movements across generations. To understand the music of the Black Church is to understand the soul of the Black Church itself. Come ready to listen deeply, reflect honestly, and celebrate a tradition that still sings us forward. #BlackChurch #BlackChurchMusic #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackFaith #SacredSound #GospelMusic #NegroSpirituals #SongsOfSurvival #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackLegacy #FaithInAction #TheBlackChurch #BlackChurchEmpowered #BlackVoices #OurStoryOurStrength #WorshipTradition
