Richard Jose - tune trad/ words by Richard Trethewey Richard Jose is a famous son of Cornwall. A cousin Jack who left Cornwall in search of work following the death of his father. The eldest of five children, he crossed the storming Atlantic aged fourteen, comforting his fellow travellers with his rare singing voice. On reaching New York he discovered the relative assigned to meet him there had not turned up so he walked from New York to Nevada, crossing deserts cracked and dry, singing in bars and saloons to Cornish miners. He found work in a relatives blacksmith shop but before long his talents were recognised and a performing and recording career took off. Jose was described by the great Caruso as the finest balladeer in the world! Jose returned to Cornwall in 1895 and walked from Redruth train station to Lanner, guided by the lights of lanterns and candles in all the windows along the way which were lit to welcome him home. Jose performed a sell out concert at Lanner Chapel, with people spilling out onto the streets!
