We invited five individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate in a Brokered Dialogue to share their perspectives about homelessness, public space and safety in their community. A brokered dialogue is a film making technique that brokers a series of conversations among people with different perspectives about a complex social issue to foster critical thinking. Using a case study of three mid-size cities in Canada, the film features a conversation among two people with lived experience of homelessness and housing precarity, a service provider, business owner, and a member of law enforcement about the causes and consequences of homelessness, public safety, and ways forward. The documentary provides a greater understanding about homelessness among diverse members of the community with the goal of helping to move towards positive, solutions-focused responses that help build feelings of safety and a sense of belonging for all.a Accompanying Discussion Questions: What other topics about homelessness should be considered that were not addressed in the film? Were there issues that you felt were missing? How do you imagine these diverse perspectives might translate into action beyond this dialogue? Addressing homelessness is complicated and requires responding to diverse perspectives, as you have seen in the documentary. Do particular suggestions resonate with you more than others? How would you suggest that mid-sized communities respond to homelessness? Given the complex nature of homelessness, can you think of one immediate and one long term solution that would address the concerns raised by each participant? At what points did you see participants try to understand each other's perspectives? How does that help facilitate a dialogue? What do participants identify as key factors leading to the increased visibility of homelessness? How would you summarise this project if you were telling a friend, neighbour, or colleague? How would you illustrate or depict your own experiences with the issues identified in this film? (could give participants some art supplies…) If you were to film a sequel, what subjects, representations, or issues would you like to see included? Were there any points missing from this film that you’d like to see emphasized?
