In this episode of Legally Speaking on WFMJ Today, BK Managing Shareholder David Betras dissects the $100 million lawsuit filed by Detroit Lions fan Ryan Kennedy against Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, the Steelers, former NFL star Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, and several others. Kennedy was the fan involved in an altercation with Metcalf as the player left the field following the December 21 Steelers/Lions game at Ford Field in Detroit. Ryan’s attorney said his client filed the suit because both Metcalf and Johnson libeled him by accusing him of calling Metcalf the N word and saying his mother was a C word. Ryan denies the allegations. "Being publicly labeled a racist based on something I did not say has caused serious damage to my family, business, reputation, and has put my personal safety at risk," Kennedy said during a press conference. David questioned whether the damages sought are reasonable, reminded viewers that the burden of proof is on Kennedy, and said he doubts Metcalf would have lashed out at Kennedy unless the fan had made some type of derogatory comment. He also noted that Metcalf, who was suspended for two games by the NFL, has yet to be charged criminally for assaulting Kennedy. Detroit police said they are still investigating the incident. David will continue to follow the case and provide updates as it proceeds.
