✈️ Flights With Joel – LIVE: Part 33 – Border Peaks & The Boneyard (KLRU ➜ KDMA) For Part 33, we depart Las Cruces (KLRU) and continue west across southern New Mexico into Arizona, following the rugged spine of the borderlands. This leg trades wide desert plains for dramatic mountain ranges and finishes with one of the most iconic aviation sights in the world. Climbing out of Las Cruces, the Organ Mountains fall behind us as we track toward the Arizona state line, desert stretching endlessly below. Stops & Scenic Touch-and-Goes 🇺🇸 KLSB – Lordsburg Municipal A classic desert waypoint, Lordsburg sits along I-10 and the old Southern Pacific rail corridor. Sparse, dry, and wide open — pure Southwest flying. 🇺🇸 SSO – Sierra Vista Municipal (Libby Army Airfield) Approaching the Huachuca Mountains, the terrain becomes more varied. Sierra Vista has deep military aviation ties and sits just north of the U.S.–Mexico border. 🇺🇸 P33 – Tombstone Municipal A fun historical pass. Tombstone, the town of the 1881 O.K. Corral shootout, lies just north of the field — Old West history visible from above. 🇺🇸 E95 – Benson Municipal A quiet desert strip framed by low ridges and long highway lines, another perfect Southwest checkpoint. ✈️ The Airplane Boneyard – Davis–Monthan AFB (AMARG) Before landing, we make a deliberate flyover of the legendary aircraft boneyard in Tucson. Thousands of retired military aircraft are stored here in the dry desert climate — fighters, bombers, cargo planes — neatly arranged in long geometric rows. It’s one of the most surreal aviation sights on Earth. Final Destination 🛬 KDMA – Davis–Monthan Air Force Base We wrap up at one of the most storied Air Force bases in the United States, home to A-10 operations and decades of aviation history.
