In Turkana, livestock are more than just animals—they are the heartbeat of the community. While goats, camels, and donkeys provide food and income, it is the donkey that takes center stage. Carrying water, food, and goods across harsh landscapes, donkeys are lifelines, equipped with the traditional esajait harness. At Brooke East Africa, in partnership with the Agency for Cross Border Pastoralists Development (APaD), we are empowering Turkana communities to embrace innovative solutions that enhance donkey welfare and build sustainable livelihoods. 🌊 Access to Water: In Lokwee Village, families no longer travel 25+ km for water, thanks to the rehabilitation of a solar-powered water point. Now, over 480 households and their animals have access to clean water—right in their community. 🌾 Fodder Production: Through partnerships, groups like the Pelekech Group and Turkwel Livestock Farmers Field School Group are turning challenges into opportunities. By producing fodder, cultivating trees, and growing aloe vera, these groups ensure their donkeys are fed, livelihoods are strengthened, and the environment is preserved. 💡 Innovation and Sustainability: With modern equipment, surplus fodder is now sold to larger markets, supporting over 250 households while securing essentials like school fees and food. In Turkana, donkeys and people walk side by side, shaping a future where culture, community, and sustainability thrive. This is Turkana. This is our commitment to making a difference. #Sustainability #AnimalWelfare #Turkana #BrookeEastAfrica #CommunityResilience
