In this episode, I explore the Harlem Renaissance, one of the most influential cultural movements in American history. I talk about its historical context, its major writers and artists, and why it marked a turning point in Black cultural self-representation in the United States. This episode is also personal for me. During my time as a visiting scholar in New York, I lived in Harlem for six months. Walking those streets, visiting the Schomburg Center, and reading Harlem Renaissance writers while physically being there gave me a deeper understanding of how literature is shaped by place and community. The Harlem Renaissance was not just a literary movement. It was an assertion of intellectual presence, artistic freedom, and cultural agency, and its legacy continues to shape African American literature today. Thank you for watching and thinking with me.
