In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy explores the anatomy and function of the limbic system, the network of interconnected brain structures that governs emotion, motivation, memory, and behavior. We begin by identifying the major components of the limbic system, including the hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus, cingulate gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, fornix, and parts of the thalamus. Each structure is discussed in relation to its unique role, such as the hippocampus in memory consolidation, the amygdala in fear and threat processing, and the hypothalamus in maintaining homeostatic and endocrine responses. We then examine the functional pathways linking these structures, focusing on the Papez circuit and its integration of emotional experiences with memory and decision-making. The lecture also highlights how sensory information from multiple modalities is filtered and tagged with emotional relevance before reaching the cerebral cortex, allowing for adaptive behavioral responses. Connections between the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex are explored to demonstrate how emotions influence executive function and social behavior. Finally, we discuss how the limbic system serves as a bridge between the autonomic nervous system and higher cortical centers, enabling the integration of physiological states with emotional experiences. This integration underlies complex human behaviors such as bonding, learning, and goal-directed action, illustrating the limbic system’s role as both a regulator of instinctual drives and a foundation for higher cognitive processes.
