In this video, I endeavored to make some red oak coasters out of cut-off scraps from when I made my coffee table last year. To start the project off I had to trim the blocks down closer to the final size. For this, I used a Japanese pull saw because the blade is thin and I enjoy using it more than a western-style push saw. Also, I just thought it would be more interesting and challenging than using my miter saw. I made everything harder on myself with this decision but for the next cut using the miter saw would've been a bit more dangerous. The next cut I had to make was to rip the blocks down to roughly half an inch in thickness. A couple of these cuts went well and a couple were pretty wonky. I spent a lot of time sanding which did not make it in the video since watching all of that would be pretty boring. Once they were to a size and shape I was content with, I put chamfers on the edges and rounded the corners. After final touches with some 240 grit sandpaper, I was ready to put my finish on them. I used Odies Oil for this project just because it's what I used on my coffee table and it was already a product I had lying around. I'm still probably going to put a second coat on the tops of the coasters just to add a little bit more durability but as they are right now I am pretty happy with them. After letting set over night I stuck on some cork squares that I trimmed to size and they're all finished. Thanks for watching!
