#440swap #bigblockbuild #70duster Things get technical as we start to precision machine the components of the rotating assembly for Alex's rad 440 build. Roger starts by getting a proper chamfer on the rod bushings so that there are no sharp edges to catch and gouge the pins. Once we chamfer them, we prep the bushings and get them bored. This process will get the bushings bored over 2/10th of a thousandth of an inch to give a little rooms for the piston pins to fit through and allow for heat expansion during operation. Once all rod bearings have been bored, we started weighing all of the pistons- finding the lightest one and then carefully removing material from each one to match them within a gram of weight of each other. Once they are all weight balanced, we repeat the same process on the rods. Now that the rods and pistons are weight matched we can get the crank on the balancer and then replicate the weight of all the pistons, rings, pins, oil and rods. Proper balancing like this is tedious but necessary for a performance build to make sure the engine spins internally in perfect harmony and no power is lost, and no unnecessary wear occurs.
