Gender Affirming Guidelines SAHCS Dr Muller 5 May2022

In October of 2021 The South African HIV Clinicians Society released the first ever Gender Affirming Health care Guideline for South Africa. In July of 2021 the NEMLC had also approved Gender affirming drugs for tertiary use. This CPD session was facilitated by the Internal medicine department of Frere and CMH (East London) to update clinicians on transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people; one of the key populations identified by the National Strategic Plan of 2016-2022. The Guideline highlights how the various dimensions of gender affirming care, including hormone treatment, can provide improved access of health care services for the TGD population. Dr Madeleine Muller is a Family Physician with the CMH Family medicine department as well as a senior lecturer with Walter Sisulu University. She is convenor of the Diploma of HIV management for the College of Family Medicine with the CMSA and has a special interest in setting up services that provide access to care for key and vulnerable populations.
