Kupczyk died in hospital from wounds suffered in an ambush on Thursday while returning to Karbala from the nearby Dogwood US Army base. Calling Kupczyk "a model officer and colleague", his commanding officer General Marek Ojrzanowski said his death was a sudden and unexpected blow for his regiment and friends. Ojrzanowski said that Polish troops in Iraq will continue their stabilisation tasks despite the tragedy and promised that all will be done to seek out and punish Kupczyk's killers. After the ceremony, Kupczyk's coffin was transported by helicopter to Baghdad, from where it will be flown for burial in Poland.
