Presented by Lisa Halvorson, M.D., Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology has developed guidelines for learning for the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). These guidelines specify that training should include information that provides the fellow with the ability to discuss neuroendocrine physiology and function to diagnose and manage patients with diseases originating in the neuroendocrinologic system. Also, the fellow should have knowledge of gross, microscopic histology, and immunohistochemical techniques as they relate to the diagnosis and further clarification of reproductive endocrine pathology. This internet activity is designed to provide such training to reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellows as well as other practitioners of reproductive medicine. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of the educational activity, participants should be able to: 1. Discuss anatomical-functional relationships of the hypothalamus, neurovascular, and target cells of the pituitary. 2. Define regulatory secretory activities of the pituitary hormones 3. Explain the distribution and cellular characteristics of pituitary hormone producing cells 4. Describe neuroendocrine regulation of the menstrual cycle 5. Discuss organic lesion and/or functional disorder of the hypothalamic-pituitary system 6. Explain deficiencies of the hypothalamic-pituitary system 7. Identify cellular morphology of normal and neoplastic cells of the adenohypophysis 8. Summarize anatomy and function of the neurohypophysis 9. Discuss regulation of prolactin production 10. Discuss medical, surgical and radiological interventions for pituitary pathology
