(20 Jan 1998) Thai/Nat As Asia's economic crisis begins to affect ordinary people - unrest has broken out on the streets of Thailand. A protest by about 3-thousand workers at a factory outside Bangkok turned violent Tuesday night, and police called for hundreds of reinforcements to try to restore control. Workers at an auto parts factory were protesting a 30 percent salary cut and a reduction in their annual bonus. About 3-thousand workers began a protest early Tuesday afternoon outside the Thai Summit Auto Parts factory, 20 kilometers (10 miles) from the capital, Bangkok. The protesters became more aggressive after several hours and began to block the road, eventually causing police to block all traffic. After dark, the protestors began to throw stones and other objects at the factory, including firebombs, TV and radio reports said. Stones, wood and other debris could be seen later on the factory grounds. A police official interviewed on radio said that the 100 police at the scene were not enough to control the situation, as it was feared the workers would try to burn the factory down. In December 1996, workers burned down a factory belonging to the Japanese company Sanyo in a similar protest over bonuses. SOUNDBITE: (Thai) "It is a terrible thing - the economy - everybody knows. SUPER CAPTION: Thawee Jarungsathitphong, Factory Information Technology Manager It was not just police hitting the protestors - even some reporters joined in the violence - throwing rocks at protesters and beating them up.
