Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world The series of powerful storms in Europe in the winter season of 25-26 continues unabated. Another strong Mediterranean storm hit southwestern France. In some areas, wind gusts exceeded 180 km/h (112 mph). The strongest gust was recorded in Cagnano – 185 km/h (115 mph), according to Météo-France. According to the latest reports, two people have died. More than 900,000 customers were left without power, and authorities issued red and orange warnings in several departments. In the Savoie department, a red avalanche warning was issued after reports of numerous avalanches. In the Charente department, 66 residents of a nursing home were evacuated due to the building's location near a river. The storm caused torrential rain, flooding, and road flooding, with many highways closed. Historic flooding has occurred in the French department of Lot-et-Garonne. The Garonne River in Marmande reached 10.33 meters—the highest level in recent years and higher than the 2021 flood. The city is virtually cut off from the outside world: roads are flooded, bridges are closed, and crossing the river between Agen and Bordeaux is impossible. The water has surged far beyond its banks, in places reaching kilometers inland. Around 19,000 homes remain without power, and water and communications services have been disrupted in several areas. Hundreds of rescuers and police are working at the scene. A receding water level is expected, but due to ongoing adverse weather conditions, it will be very slow. The situation is also grave in neighboring towns. In the town of Tonnins, the water level exceeded 9.5 meters, and in Aiguillon, a dam broke, prompting the evacuation of residents. Further precipitation could not only further slow the receding water levels in the coming days but also intensify already severe flooding.
