beveling leather feathers quickly, tapered strands skived by hand using part of a hotel room card and a scalpel. bevel is wider than 45 degrees, likely 35 from level. creates a 6ft strip of triangular waste usually as a single strip. I've got a close up video of my view point so you can look at what I'm doing from my point of view, This is me talking about what I'm doing and demonstrating the process I use. This is my method, took me a week to figure this out several years ago as I had nobody to teach me. I started engineering a hand held tool to do this process and figured out this method was easier than building a prototype beveler. Setting the cant of the blade to be adjustable as well as the entry angle in a small device was far more complicated than learning this hand method. One advantage of using this method is that you can reduce the width of a taper by moving your thumbnail wider than the blade allowing you to take off a 0.5 mm or 1/64" strip off of the width of the entire taper without changing the taper angle of the strip. so If you are braiding a tapered whip you can reduce the width for the rest of the braid and keep the original taper of the strand. You can also use a stick or dowel with a notch, and a leather strip at an angle to the blade to run against to do the same thing, if you run a different attack angle on a fixed blade you will understand quickly that the entry point and attack angle matters and it differs with different tempers of leather, veg is firm and chrome or alum or brain tanned is soft and spongy, stretching it as it goes thru the blade is the key to a nice beveled flesh side though the method and blade choices will differ with the skin side strength.
