A live improvisation based on an actual ancient Egyptian musical scale - performed on a replica of a surviving ancient Egyptian lyre from circa 1,500 BCE! Thanks to the survival of several examples of still playable ancient Egyptian flutes, replica instruments based on the exact dimensions of them provide surviving examples of actual musical scales/modes which ancient Egyptian musicians once based their musical inspiration on [http://egyptsound.free.fr/fathi.htm] One of these scales used, was the minor pentatonic: "Ancient Egyptian music was based on a minor pentatonic scale of five full tones without halftones. This fact can be inferred from the positions of the holes on flutes" [http://alangarner.atspace.org/music.htm] The antiquity of this scale can be inferred also in how widespread it is around the world - it is the same scale still so commonly used in music of the far east to this very day. Indeed, in the improvisation, I attempt to further evoke the far eastern koto-like timbre, by adding vibrato to the stings in a few sections, by applying varying pressure to the strings with fingers placed on them behind the bridge of the lyre. This lyre was reconstructed from the actual dimensions of this miraculously surviving ancient Egyptian lyre, by Luthieros: http://www.luthieros.com The original lyre is now preserved in Leiden: http://manniche.daes.dk/wp/wp-content... To hear more of this amazing lyre, please also check out my album, "The Ancient Egyptian Lyre" - available from all the usual digital music platforms, lossless studio quality audio with a PDF booklet of the detailed album notes is also available, only on Bandcamp: https://michaellevy.bandcamp.com/albu...
