Jessonda is a Grand Opera in three acts by Louis Spohr (1784–1859). The libretto in German was written by Eduard Heinrich Gehe. The premiere took place on July 28, 1823 in Kassel. The running time is approximately 2 ¼ hours. The opera Jessonda is an idea of Louis Spohr. He created it in 1822. He took the opera Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber (1786–1826), which premiered in Berlin in 1821, as a model. Like Weber and later Richard Wagner (1813–1883), he strove to combine equally important parts of language, music and theatre in a "total work of art". As a musical explorer of new territory, he took up Weber's concept of a singspiel-like, romantic opera. The result was a self-contained, through-composed work characterised by leitmotifs and a new German opera form at the time. The writer Eduard Heinrich Gehe used the play La Veuve du Malabar ou L'Empire des coutumes (1770) by Antoine-Marin Lemierre (1723–1793) as a model for the libretto. Spohr's opera Jessonda in particular had a wide impact, and for over thirty years it was performed abroad. The magnificent set, sensational optical effects, large ballet scenes, effective use of the choir and the exotic scenery were all very fascinating. After a performance in Leipzig, he wrote: "When I entered the orchestra, I was greeted with general cheers. The greatest, truly furious enthusiasm was aroused by the duet between Amazali and Nadori." The opera is not part of the current repertoire. There is a recording of a performance in 1985 in Vienna under the direction of Gerd Albrecht. The same conductor recorded it again in 1991 with the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra and, among others, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the role of Tristan, his wife Julia Varady in the role of Jessonda and Kurt Moll in the role of Dandau. 0:00 Overture Act I 8:12 No. 1 - Introduction: Kalt und starr, doch majestatisch 17:25 No. 2 - Recitative: Nadori!
