"Watch the legendary debate between Gargi and Yajnavalkya from Brihadaranyaka Upanishad! Discover the eternal truth of the Atman and Brahman explained beautifully in this Upanishad Ganga episode." Upanishad Ganga - Ep 30 - The Existence Principle | Debate between Gargi and Yajnavalkya In this enlightening episode of Upanishad Ganga, we witness the legendary philosophical debate between the great Vedic scholar Gargi Vachaknavi and the revered sage Acharya Yajnavalkya. This dialogue revolves around the true nature of the Atman (Self) and the Brahman (Supreme Reality). Summary of the Story: Gargi, one of the most celebrated women philosophers of the Vedic era, was devoted to the pursuit of ultimate knowledge rather than worldly pleasures. Her mother wished for her to get married and live the life of a householder, but Gargi’s aspiration was to realise Brahman. When she learnt that King Janaka of Videha had organised a grand Brahma Sabha (spiritual assembly) in Mithila, inviting the most learned sages and scholars, she decided to attend. In King Janaka’s assembly, Gargi posed profound questions to Yajnavalkya on the nature of existence and the Self: 1️⃣ From what is the past, present and future created? 2️⃣ On what is the sky and the entire universe established? Yajnavalkya, with his supreme spiritual wisdom, answered these questions, explaining the eternal and imperishable nature of the Atman and the all-pervading principle of Brahman. Key Insights: The Existence Principle: Yajnavalkya explains that the one who acknowledges the existence of Brahman is truly wise. Those who deny this existence are essentially denying their own. Nature of the Atman: The Atman is eternal, imperishable and changeless. Bodies change, the world changes, but the Self always remains the same. Role of Women in Vedic Tradition: Gargi’s intellectual strength shows how women in the Vedic period actively participated in philosophical debates and questioned established norms. Tradition of Debate: The dialogue reflects the vibrant tradition of Shastrarth (philosophical debates) in ancient India, where knowledge was constantly refined through questioning and discussion.
