German Shepherds are known for certain health issues and I will list the 3 most common diseases I see them get as a practicing veterinarian. It's often compared to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in humans. 🧬 Genetic testing can identify if a dog carries the SOD1 mutation, indicating a higher risk, but it doesn't guarantee the development of the disease. NUMBER 2️⃣Hemangiosarcoma cancer in GSDs - an aggressive and highly malignant cancer that originates from the cells lining blood vessels. It is particularly prevalent in German Shepherd Dogs, along with Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, suggesting a genetic predisposition. With surgery and chemotherapy, survival times may extend to 5 to 9 months, but still, fewer than 10-15% of dogs are alive one year after diagnosis. German Shepherds have a strong genetic predisposition to hip dysplasia. It's considered a polygenic trait, meaning multiple genes contribute to its development, which can make inheritance patterns complex. Even dogs with "normal" parents can produce offspring with HD if those offspring inherit problematic genes from both sides. ❤️While German Shepherds have been over bred for their popularity as protection, working and family dogs there are incredible dog breeders that are preserving the breed and focusing on their health.
