Voting begins in HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED Gorton and Denton by-election

Voters in Greater Manchester will head to the polls today, February 26, to choose a new MP for Gorton and Denton. Eleven candidates are standing in the highly-anticipated by-election, which is being seen as a major test for Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership. Polling stations opened up at 7am and will close at 10pm before the vote count gets underway. The result is then likely to be announced in the early hours of Friday morning. The by-election comes following the resignation of the previous sitting MP, Andrew Gwynne, last month. Mr Gwynne had served as an MP for the constituency since 2005, when it was known as Denton and Reddish. He officially resigned on January 22, citing medical grounds as the reason. In his statement, Mr Gwynne, who was sitting as an independent MP after being suspended from the Labour Party, cited "significant ill health" and mental health challenges.
